Verify that there are sufficient benchmarks, monuments, and stakes to identify key points.  Site Drawing - Commercial Project 2. Verify the requirements for field engineering for the layout of the construction project.  Verify your property corners are set. 3. Verify that all permits and approvals have been obtained from all jurisdictional agencies. 4. Obtain a geotechnical investigation including subsurface ground moisture, bearing capacity of the soils, geological features, chemical compositions, and other items about the sub-surface conditions.  Erosion Control & SWPPP 1. Silt Fence       A silt fence will be constructed on the perimeter of your lot or property to collect any soil runoff. I saved the life of a construction worker on a Jobsite, Safety Tips

Image
"You saved my life. This projectile flew off the roof and hit me square on top of my hard hat. If you didn't come along and tell me to put my hard hat on, I would have been killed."                       THE REST OF THE STORY Back in the 80's I was involved in building the Marriott at Bay Hotel and Resort in Panama City Beach, Florida. One day I was walking the construction site. We were setting forms on the top floor for a concrete pour.  On the first floor we began to install the Air Conditioning duct work. The tin knockers were outside the first floor assembling the duct work.  None of them had their hard hats on.  So, I stopped them and told them to put their hard hats on. The foreman protested saying it was too hot to wear a hard hat.  I counted and stated that there was work being performed above them and something may happen.  They reluctantly agreed and put their hard hats on.  I continue...

My Boss almost got killed on our construction site. Safety Tips

And a gust of wind came up and the 40-foot aluminum ladder came straight back off the side of the 2-story house and landed with a boom about 1 foot away from where my boss was standing.  THE REST OF THE STORY Way back in the '70's when I was studying civil engineering at Penn State University, I was building houses during one summer as a carpenter assistant and laborer.  One day I was carrying roofing shingles up onto the roof of this 2-story house that we were building.  The 40-foot aluminum ladder was propped up against the 2-story house. It was about a 24' climb to the roof.  My boss just arrived as I was ascending the ladder. He parked in front of the house and when he got out of his truck, he yelled at me. "What the hell are you doing carrying one tab of shingles at a time? In my day, I carried 2 tabs at a time. That roofer needs those shingles up there pronto." So, I carried 2 tabs of shingles up on to the roof for the remainder of this task. Yes, it's d...

Be aware of Heat Advisories on Construction projects

Image
·          Almost half of heat-related deaths occur on a worker’s very first day on the job ·          Over 70 percent of heat-related deaths occur during a worker’s first week  THE REST OF THE STORY In my first job after graduating with a civil engineering degree from Penn State, I was overseeing a $5 million Manufacturing Plant on 35 acres.  During construction, we installed a 6” fire water line from the pump building throughout the project to the three main buildings, the Manufacturing building, the warehouse, and the office building. During the construction of this fire line, I had a young man show up at my construction trailer. He was about 19 years old, 5’10”, and had a very slight build. He wore slacks and a white shirt with a black tie. He introduced himself and asked if I had any work for him. I told him I didn’t,  but the fire line contractor might need a laborer to install this...
