How do you Mobilize on your Construction Project?

Start your project off right with a 

Checklist for Mobilization 



Field Engineering

1. Ensure that survey information is available and accurate. Verify that there are sufficient benchmarks, monuments, and stakes to identify key points. 




2. Verify the requirements for field engineering for the layout of the construction project. 


 Verify your property corners are set. 

3. Verify that all permits and approvals have been obtained from all jurisdictional agencies.

4. Obtain a geotechnical investigation including subsurface ground moisture, bearing capacity of the soils, geological features, chemical compositions, and other items about the sub-surface conditions. 

Erosion Control & SWPPP

5. Review the permitting process with your state on the Stormwater pollution prevention plan (SWPPP). And ensure plans for erosion and soil control. At a minimum, you should expect.

1. Silt Fence 

    A silt fence will be constructed on the perimeter of your lot or property to collect any soil runoff. If you have a sloped lot, then the silt fence would be at the low end of the property. 

2. Construction Entrance

 Your plan should include constructing a temporary gravel entrance or a fabricated mat. This helps prevent soil from the site being deposited on the streets. 

3. Concrete wash-out areas. 

During the concrete portion of the project, your plan should show an area where the concrete trucks can wash out their trucks. You could also use this area for your masons to wash out.

6. Verify the location of vehicle access and parking. Determine your overall plan for the placement of office trailers, dumpsters, storage trailers, and temporary toilets. 









7. Ensure that a Job Safety Program is developed and maintained. 

8. Identify the testing agencies for your project. 

9. Ensure that you have set up temporary power. Ensure that all working conditions are provided to facilitate good workmanship and worker safety. 

10. If necessary, provide temporary perimeter security fencing.

The Design-build method on your construction project versus the traditional Design, bid, build method. Project: Huntsman Chemical Computer Building Addition, Conroe, Texas  I met Huntsman in mid-August and reviewed their completed drawings for the project.   They required that their project be complete by December 1 st . Notices of Nonperformance to a Trade Contractor on a construction project

  Bridgewater College Dormitory Project Let me give you an example of an underperforming contractor from one of my past projects. I was involved in the building a $2.7 million Bridgewater Dormitory on the Campus of Bridgewater University in Bridgewater, Virginia. The Structure is 3 stories with a basement. Bridgewater Dormitory Liquidated Damage Project This was a liquidated damage clause project. The project had to be completed before the school year started in late August. Liquidated Damages clause means that if we go over the allotted time for the project then we would be charged a specific amount for each day that we were over the time limit. So,  the overall schedule of this project was very critical to the completion of the project. The critical path of this project was the construction of the exterior masonry work which included the brick and the Capstone on the top of the building. Every Trade Contractor is tied to the overall schedule of the project and the completion date.

Pre-Construction in the Design Build Method of Construction

The Design-Build Method is an alternative in the building of your project.  In the Design-Build method, you will start an immediate collaboration with your Design-Build consultant (DBC) The Pre-Construction activities are the first part of the Design-Build Method. The pre-construction phase starts with a Preliminary drawing or sketch that can be generated by the Design-Build consultant or the Owner. Develop Estimates and Budgets From there, you want to establish the Budget of the project from the design stage through the construction stage. The DBC team will start with square foot estimates. As more detailed drawings are completed by the  D BC, they will develop a more detailed construction estimate.   Incorporate Value Engineering into your  project. At this point, the DBC will develop some Value engineering suggestions and Options for the building.
