Built to Last: The Ultimate Wood Framing Checklist

FRAMING QUALITY CHECKLIST



WALL FRAMING

1) Are the walls square? (check 3-4-5 method)

2) Are the walls plumb?

3) Are all the studs 16” on center or per print?

4) Are all the studs crowned consistently?

5) Are the walls free of twisted or bowed studs?

6) Are all the corners framed correctly? Build California Corners to get maximum insulation on exterior walls. 

7) Is the corner bracing or plywood present and installed properly?

 (nailing 45 degrees)

8) Is the installed sheathing stapled or nailed correctly?


9) Is the Exterior sheathing free from holes or

damage?




10) Do you have the correct dimension lumber on all the headers? Recess the headers for insulation on the exterior walls.

11) Do the splices in the top plates occur over studs?

12) Are the wall-top plate tie-ins evident, and correct?

13) Is the rough doorway measurements correct?

14) Rough window measurements, correct?


15) Verify bridging, blocks and bracing are provided as required and in suitable manner.


16) Verify fire blocking is provided as required






17) Are the Medicine cabinets framed per print?

18) Are the Attic access openings framed correctly?

19) Verify that the plywood or OSB sheathing is applied as specified: Grade, dimension, staggering, nailing, blocking, and no overdriven nails. 





20) Verify that the sheathing paper air infiltration vapor barrier is provided as required and installed properly and not damaged. 



Are the trusses spaced 2' on center or per the drawings?

ROOF FRAMING

Are the truss clips evident on the center and on the exterior walls?

Is the gable end truss bracing evident and correct?

Is the roof framing installed with metal "H" clips?


MISCELLANEOUS FRAMING

Is the site free of trash and framing debris?

Are there no signs of floor squeaks?

Is there no evident floor spring or bounce?
